That's not pessimism. [ A beat, ] ... Like, perhaps you've had some many identities this argument seems a little silly, but that's just the truth of it. People can only ever be who they are.

Whether Kim Rok Soo or Cale Henituse, I'm the same person. That person has just changed on the inside over the years because—

Because people naturally change over time. The 'you' of now is different than the 'you' from when you were a little kid. And the future 'you' will be different than the current 'you'.

Of course people change, the whole point is that people are doomed to be themselves, though. It's more scary if people can just be other people.

[ He thinks about what he said, then realizes that it doesn't work in most cases because he was using 'soul' as 'person', and most souls end up being reborn with no memories. ]

'Doomed' is pretty pessimistic language. Also, for most people it is possible to become someone else. Rather, it is inevitable for most people.

[ To grow and change maybe, but to become someone else? Leave that to spirits or demons, as far as he's concerned. Lex shakes his head at the cat and then reaches around him to get another beer. ]

Yeah, yeah. Don't worry, do I even come off as negative?

[ He moves his head to rub his cheek on Lex's arm as the man reaches around him.

Then pulls back looking as baffled as a cat possibly can, wondering why the heck he just did that.

He decides to just ignore it and pretend he didn't do that. ]

I mean, yeah? 'Doomed' is a pretty negative word.

[ Said with an impish grin, one which doesn't totally match his own now-dark green eyes. It doesn't seem totally out of step with it, but it's something he says with a laugh ]

Like I said, it's a turn of phrase. I can only be me, and I'm stuck with all that hang ups that implies.

I didn't use to, but I guess I do now.

[ Cale watches him closely, sensing something slightly off and taking note of it, but choosing not to mention it. ]

You seem like an alright person, even with all the hang ups.
